Star Wars: Legacy: 37: Tatooine part 1
What is it ? : An Imperial Transport is raided by Black Sun pirates wanting to seize it's cargo of Blasters, when Cade, Jariah and Deliah come to their rescue pretending to be Jedi. Cade then mind tricks the Imperials into handing over their cargo and blaming it on Black Sun.
On Coruscant the number of pirate raids has brought it to the attention of the Imperial Council of Moffs, Nyna Calixte and Morlish Veed discuss the situation with Nyna promising to send agents to Tatooine to help investigate, and telling Veed that she will be away for a while attempting to get agents onto Korriban to investigate the situation with Krayt. Veed tells her he has been summoned into a private meeting with Wyyrlok, a meeting he is worried will lead to his death, especially as he is going into it blind. Nyna reveals that she is sending Morrigan Corde and her own daughter Gunn Yage.
On the Gas Giant Kaer, the Black Sun Vigo is investigating how his pirates are getting raided, suspicious that it's an inside man revealing information he threatens his subordinate, Naxy Screeger, telling him to find out what is going on.
On Tatooine, Cade and his gang have landed but a part on the Mynock has failed, but they have a cargo to sell so it should be no problem. However the buyer tells them the cargo is hot as both the Empire and Black Sun will recognise it, so it is worth little. Cade contacts Naxy Screeger who tells him that Black Sun is looking for the pirate that is raiding them, and recommends going into hiding.
To get the part they need, Cade comes up with a plan that Deliah will wear the robes they still have aboard belonging to the Imperial Mission, and she should go undercover into the mission and get them to charitably provide the part.
Black Sun agents find the fence that Cade was using, and discover the false name Cade was using, Luke Skywalker.
Gunn Yage gets the command to go to Tatooine to put her black op's training into use, and to rendezvous with Morrigan Corde, she reports into the local Moff, Nieve Gromia, who reveals Cade's ship and false identity, but Gunn recognises the ship from Coruscant, and knows that it's Cade, taking a speeder and heading off on her mission.
Gromia contacts the Black Sun Vigo who she takes payments from, revealing the Imperial Transport schedules to him, and tells him what she has been told. And he responds by sending his top three assassins to take out Cade to distract Morrigan Corde. . . .
High Points : Cade using the force as a pirate is pretty interesting, pretending to be Jedi, who in this era even Imperial captain think are heroic saviours is pretty clever, and using the force to pass the blame onto others is smart. And I do like the way that the characters are tied into the plot, the Moff is making profit by selling information to criminals to make up for what she considers a low status posting, so they instantly know it's not Black Sun doing the piracy, leading to the hunt for Cade.
Low Points : So, Cade is so successful as a pirate that his activities have been brought to the attention of the Council of Moff's itself. Yet he's making so little money that he can't afford to repair his ship? I suppose it's possible that the Black Sun piracy has been of such a level that it's what has brought the attention of the Council of Moffs, and Cade is just caught up in this. But that's not what the story indicates, with them even telling you that Cade has done this six times now.
Also it's all a bit convenient, Cade is now being hunted by Morrigan Corde (his mother), and Gunn Yage (his half sister), while this could make sense as it's Nyna Calixte (his mother Morrigan Corde's other identity) that has set this in motion, but how did she know that it's Cade behind the piracy?
So what do you really think ? : It's the start of a story, so it's setting up a lot for the rest of the issues to follow, but it's done fairly clumsily, as we're jumping into a story already in progress, Naxy has somehow become the aide to a Black Sun Vigo since we last saw him, Cade has been using that to obtain information on the Imperial Transports that Black Sun is going to raid, which they themselves obtained from their contact within the Empire. Meanwhile, Nyna has a hostile relationship with that Moff, and is going in disguise along with her daughter to investigate.
Some of it makes sense, but it just feels we've skipped a lot of setup. It seems as if a lot of time has passed for Cade and his gang (time for them to set up Naxy as their contact, and do 5 pirate raids, and spend all the proceeds), but no time has passed on Coruscant (Veed and Calixte are just beginning to respond to the situation with Wyyrlok and Krayt).
Final Words : So Cade travels to Tatooine where his ancestors Luke and Anakin were both raised, and his mother and half sister are both going to be hunting for him, sounds like a Skywalker family reunion is being set up (yes, I know Corde and Yage aren't Skywalkers, but they're still part of the extended family).
