Star Wars: Visions: Season 3: Episode 3: The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope
What is it ? : A starship containing the survivors is being pursued by another ship, and is about to jump into Hyperspace when Lah Kara falls off and is floating alone in her spacesuit when it jumps away.
She floats thinking of her father, when she is spotted by a droid in the asteroid field, he bring her aboard the starship where he is, but she awakens thinking she has been captured, so flees into the massive interior of the ship where automated defences attack her. She uses her lightsaber to defend herself, the droid, Teto, recognises her as a Jedi, and pleads with her to help his master. Their ship was crippled in the asteroid field, and his master was injured and put into a Bacta tank, telling Teto that a Jedi could save them.
She agrees, but the way is blocked by a massive statue which has toppled, their combined strength cannot move it, but Kara uses the force to clear the way. Inside Teto sees his master in the Bacta tank, but Kara discovers it has been too long and the master died years ago. Teto is sad, but grateful to Kara for helping him see his master one last time and pledges to help her.
Suddenly the ship shudders as the vessel belonging to the hunters from the start of the episode lands in one of the hangars. The sneak and watch the hunters dispatch troops to search, and Kara thinks these might be the people who took her father, so they lure the troops into the area with the automated defences, however the hunters disable them and Kara has to confront them with her lightsaber.
They admit one of their number has her father, and a hunter throws his hat at Kara, which she easily slices through, only to discover it contains flashbangs, which blind her. The hunters move in to capture Kara, only for Teto to turn their trick back on them by using one of their own flashbangs to allow him to escape with Kara.
He takes her to a chamber, forcing her into a small room, which he reveals is the last functioning lifepod on the vessel, it only lacks power. So he locks her in, and powers the escape pod from his own power supply.
She launches away, and Teto activates the self destruct on his ship, which explodes killing all aboard.
Kara's lifepod is discovered by her friends who rescue her, but she remains devastated that Teto sacrificed himself to save her, but they have a lead on where her father is now . . . .
High Points : Although done in an anime style, this really felt like Star Wars, I adored the giant vessel that Teto and his master were aboard, it felt as if there really was a story behind it, and I wanted to know more.
The use of Flashbangs, especially when they distracted Kara by throwing their hat at her, was fantastic and made so much sense, and Teto turning it back on the hunters was great.
And Teto was so appealing, his sacrifice I really felt, as I wanted to see more of this little droid.
Low Points : My one criticism of this, is that the Ninth Jedi elements were totally unimportant to this story. It could have been any time or place, a Jedi rescued by a droid while being hunted, earns the respect of that droid, which in turn saves their life. This story could have been Anakin being hunted by Grievous during the clone wars, Ahsoka in the New Republic era, or anything else.
So what do you really think ? : I wasn't expecting much of this one, and was very pleasantly surprised as I really enjoyed it. There was mystery, action, hints at the galaxy being so much larger than what we were shown, it was exactly what these Visions are supposed to be, a glimpse into someone else's version of Star Wars, and it's actually made me excited for the Ninth Jedi spin off series.
Final Words : Okay, my disappointment with this season is gone, we've got a great little gem of a story here, that I really enjoyed, and am looking forward to the remaining episodes which fingers crossed will also have some really interesting stories to tell.
Score : 9/10

The story behind this episode was one of my favorites in the first season. I'm glad it's popular enough to warrant its own series which is coming soon. So this episode helps us remember what this is about.
I have to admit Kara went through a mental and emotional wringer in this one, and she already had enough on her plate.
I was hoping Teto would join her and the others.
So they have three goals - finding the other Jedi, defeating the Sith, and rescuing her father. And they now have a clue about #3.
Would have wanted to see more of the others, though.

I was really hoping Teto would join her, as he has been given more character development than the rest of the group with Kara, and I'd have really loved to see more of him.
I wasn't particularly looking forward to the Ninth Jedi spin off series, but if this is the quality of work they produce, then I think there could be some brilliant episodes to come.
