Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures: Season 2: Story 38: Yoda Rescue

What is it ? : The Young Jedi are with Nash in her ship following some Purrgil, to record their song for Master Zanna, when they pick up a signal on the same channel. They decipher it as a distress call from Jedi Master Yoda. Kai can't believe that Yoda would need help, but Lys tells him everyone needs help from time to time.
They follow the signal and arrive at a planet which is wracked by volcanos erupting all the time, and discover Yoda's signal is near the summit of one of the volcanos. They set down and Lys spots bite marks in the rocks which she recognises as marks from Lava Beetles, which eat the rocks for the metals within, and they often feast on starship hulls as well.
Nash stays behind to guard the Crimson Firehawk, while the others go to Yodas signal. They soon encounter a lavaflow with no way around it, so throw a couple of boulders into the flow as stepping stones. But unknown to them they have disturbed some Lava Beetles which head for the ship.
Climbing the volcano, they find Yoda, who was injured in the crash on the world, but he hobbles along with, especially when Nash contacts them to say beetles are trying to eat the ship, and she's having problems holding them off with her spanner.
They travel back to the ship, and use the force to push the beetles back from it, but the ship is damaged and Nash will take a few moments to fix it, when the volcano erupts and a lava flow is heading straight for them.
Yoda uses the force to hold it back, but it's too much for him, so he gets Kai to help hold it back. Nash finishes fixing the ship and they take off, with Yoda and Kai leaping on at the last second with Kai helping Yoda due to his injury.
They ask why Yoda was all the way out here anyway, and he tells them he was on a mission, and asks them why they were there as well, and they show him the Puurgil as Kai expresses that it's good to know great Jedi Masters sometimes need help as well. . . .

High Points : It's interesting to see a situation where they Young Jedi need to come to the help of Yoda, although I do wish more had been made of his injury, to relegate him to an advisory role throughout, for example they apparently get back over the lava flow without any difficulty at all, where them helping him would have made a nice moment.

Low Points : Is there a reason why Nash is holding the Lava Beetles back with a spanner, when not only do they eat metal (which puts her droid in danger as well, something never mentioned in the episode) but she's stood on top of the ship right next to it's laser cannons. Shouldn't she be blowing them away, or would that bother Lys too much?
And Yoda needs Kai's help to hold back the Lava? Why? I thought size matters not? Or is this just something to keep the kid happy, as Yoda does seem to have an odd expression on his face when he asks.

So what do you really think ? : I actually really liked this one, while much of it is pandering to it's audience, look it's Yoda, and even he needs the kids help, look they're not killing these dangerous beetles, because the beetles are just doing what is natural, look Puurgil are just like whales, even down to the whale song. But there's some action, the kids each get to do what they're best at, Nub's lifting heavy things, Lys recognising animals, and Kai trying to be a hero, so it feels a well rounded and fun episode.

Final Words : And the moral of this episode is, no matter how old or powerful you are, sometimes you need help (or maybe sometime you need to ask for help, which is a similar but distinct message).

Score : 8/10
