Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures: Season 3: Story 5: Journey to the Bottom of Naboo

What is it ? : The Young Jedi are on Naboo, they've been given the mission of recovering a lost Jedi Navigation Compass that was lost of the Twilight Explorer, it is an ancient method that Jedi used to use to navigate the galaxy.
They are taken down into the oceans by their Gungan guide Kluurt, who asks Kai to pilot while she navigates. But as they descend they spot another submarine, this one piloted by Tooba Jinx, and he taunts them that he is also here for the compass. As they race down, they disturb a Colo Claw Fish, which chases the Jedi into a cavern. But Kluurt reveals this is a short cut to the wreck of the Twilight Explorer, so they beat Tooba there.
As they use diving suits to explore the wreck, Kai finds the compass, but Tooba arrives and grabs it with a grapple. They give chase, but he causes some crates to fall on Kluurt, so the Young Jedi have to hold back to rescue her allowing him to escape.
Kluurt suggests using the short cut to catch up with Tooba, which they do, but the Colo Claw Fish is still waiting, and it causes Tooba to crash into another cavern, his submarine wrecked. But he is trapped within it, so calls on the Young Jedi to help, and Lys distracts the Colo Claw Fish with their submarine while Kai and Nubs release Tooba.
The Compass gets dropped, and the Colo Claw Fish causes rocks to drop, so Kai and Tooba have to forget their attempts to retrieve the Compass to escape.
Back on the docks, Tooba escapes, but Kluurt reveals she retrieved the Compass and they activate it revealing a holographic star map. . . .

High Points : Another fine episode, reminiscent of the submarine section of The Phantom Menace, with the submarines, Colo claw fish and setting all looking very familiar. The story kind of makes sense, with the kids being sent to a safe world to retrieve a lost Jedi artefact.

Low Points : So in The Phantom Menace the Gungans are a fairly unknown and mysterious species, and I could totally accept Tooba Jinx as a renegade being active across the galaxy, but now the young Jedi have another Gungan guide, Kluurt. So why are Gungans pretty much forgotten about only a couple of hundred years later? That said, we see no humans on Naboo, so did the world only get colonised after this episode, and the Gungans went into hiding, which might really make an interesting story.
Only a few episodes ago, when the Young Jedi were chasing Tooba Jinx in a lake on Tenoo, it was commented that there was no way they could swim as fast as him, as he was a Gungan. Yet in this episode, Kai does swim at the same speed as Tooba. I only draw attention to it, because they did.

So what do you really think ? : While it feeling familiar is pretty good, it's all just too familiar, we saw a Gungan submarine chased by a Colo Claw Fish in The Phantom Menace, and now we see the same again. I'd have liked to see something a bit new and now so derivative.

Final Words : And the moral of this episode, is . . . unclear. Perhaps just a simple, don't steal. Although I will point out, only Kai getting to the Compass first makes Tooba a thief, if he'd gotten there first, he'd just be salvaging, as the Jedi have no greater claim on the wreckage as anyone else.

Score : 7.5/10
