Star Wars Jedi: Survivor: Mission on Coruscant

What is it ? : We pick up 5 years after Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Cal Kestis is leading a group into level 2046 of Coruscant to steal information from the Yacht of the Pauan Senator. His team are disguised as Security trooopers who have captures Cal. After Cal frees himself, they must cross the platforms and structures of the level to leap aboard the Yacht where their slicer breaches the computer systems, but they are confronted by the Ninth Sister who kills the Senator, and Cal must fight her.
They escape towards the Stinger Mantis losing team members as they go, and Cal has to decapitate the Ninth Sister when he realises she cannot be redeemed, and they launch through the levels towards the surface, with only Cal and a gunslinger called Bode Akuna managing to survive.

High Points : Like the Bracca level in Fallen Order, the Coruscant underlevels impresses and provides a really interesting start to the game. The Yacht moving through the level as Cal tries to board it works very well, bringing back the Ninth Sister provides us with a known opponent for us to fight, although I have to admit I thought she'd died in the original game.
And Cal's team works well, the banter between them works and it feels like a group who has worked together for a while, which makes each of their losses actually feel significant, because at this point we don't know which characters will be around for the entire game.

Low Points : But it doesn't manage the tension of the Bracca level, which felt like a desperate escape, at this point Cal feels like he's a hero and can manage pretty much whatever the Empire throws at him, especially after defeating the Ninth Sister, so it sets up a different tone for the game. Instead of being a plucky little Jedi fighting to survive the might of the Empire, you're a laser sword swinging hero out to take the Empire down.

It was also Bode Akuna's lines about doing anything to protect his daughter, which made me think he was going to betray me later, something which I got 100% right, although I did get the reason wrong, as he mentions being in the fight for the money, so I thought he'd just be a mercenary who sells out. But as I said yesterday, I said out loud when playing, "traitorous guy is obviously traitor".

So what do you really think ? : The game really didn't drag me in the way Fallen Order did, while it's very similar to the original game the way it plays, but you kind of get hit with more story. Fallen Order took it gently, and included so much of Cal's routine as a scrapper on Bracca, introducing his friend who gets killed, travelling from work, and even a bit of a normal day as the story builds around you. Survivor just starts in the middle of action, which is usually good, but just kind of throws you in, I spent much of the early part of the game wondering where all my friends from Fallen Order had gone, even though Cal's lone crusade does become a key plot point as the game goes on. I just wanted to know things that Cal knew, but the game was keeping from me.

Final Words : A fairly decent start to the game, but it just doesn't grab you the way the original game did, it does try to avoid the trap most sequel games fall into, with having the player lose all their abilities for some reason and have to relearn them. Survivor starts with you pretty much where you left Fallen Order, with a new set of abilities to learn later. And this level attempts to reintroduce you to those abilities, such as wall running, pulling cables towards you using the force, etc, so you can just get on with things.

Score : 8/10

The escape at the end, flying the Mantis, did feel a little desperate. Cal's team has been killed off at this point.

When I saw the previews, I thought Cal had gained the ability to pull himself towards walls using the Force. Didn't know he was using some sort of hook and line to do that. Between that and the acrobatics he can perform, you can basically see what you get when you cross Spider-Man with a Jedi.
