What is it ? : Kylo is chained as they torture him to break him, asking them if they know who he is! But they tell him he is nothing, and he thinks of telling Rey she came from nothing.
He tells them he is the Supreme Leader of the First Order, but they continue to torture him, he tells them that the First Order will come looking for him, as they've been torturing him for days, but Gardulla tells him it's only been an hour.
Gardulla's bodyguard tells the Hutt that if they keep torturing him he might die, but if they can break him he'll bring them many weapons and great power, so Gardulla gasses Kylo into unconsciousness.
He dreams of Vader slaughtering many opponents, and tells Vader that he is magnificent and asks him to teach him, but Vader refuses, telling him that everything that made him magnificent he did alone.
As he awakens they begin shocking him once more, but he turns the energy into a blast destroying the building he was kept in. He escapes into the desert and fights a Krayt Dragon taking it's skin as armor and it's claws as weapons, and he attacks a couple of desert dwellers, killing them and taking their communications system.
He goes back to Gardulla's fortress in the desert and contacts Hux and the First Order, telling them to fire on his position. When an officer points out they'll be firing on Kylo, Hux says that disobeying Kylo is dangerous, so he orders the bombardment with a wry grin on his face, obviously considering the possible death of Kylo Ren.
Kylo walks out of the Fortress holding his reclaimed lightsaber, surrounded by the bodies of Gardulla's forces, as the bombardment begins.
Later aboard the Finalizer, Kylo is contacted by Vanee, who expresses concern for Kylo asking him what he learnt, and Kylo tells him everything he did on Tatooine he did himself, and there is power in that purity. Vanee is glad, and tells him that the next part of his journey will be to follow Vaders path to Naboo where he awaits him. . . .
High Points : I continue to be amused at the writers lack of respect for Kylo as a character, his cry of "Do you know who I am?", is so weak and such a "Karen" type comment that I found it hilarious. With it being followed almost immediately by him revealing exactly who he is, trying to bargain his power, when in fact he's just letting them know the value of their prisoner makes him look so weak.
But this does turn around, when he knows he must rely on only himself he does manage to be quite impressive, barehandedly taking on a Krayt Dragon and defeating it. And it's nice that Vanee is actually bringing out Kylo's power, by forcing him to abandon all the crutches he normally leans on, and his instinct to rely on others to aid him.
Low Points : The leap in power Kylo displays doesn't make a whole load of sense though, as if he just needs to believe in himself to channel this much power, then he's possibly more powerful than Luke, as he takes the shocking he's receiving as torture to level an entire building, and it's a substantial one made of heavy stone blocks, this is perhaps beyond much of what we've seen even Vader do.
It's possible that we're seeing this through Kylo's perception though, where he aggrandises everything he does, so he destroys the building rather than just escaping. He kills a Krayt Dragon instead of just using claws from a dead one as weapons, and he slaughters everyone in Gardulla's Fortress rather than just retrieving his lightsaber and letting the orbital bombardment do the actual killing. Are we seeing Kylo's storybuilding to make him the hero, rather than the reality of the situation?
So what do you really think ? : This issue felt really quick in comparison to the others, while a lot happens while he is unconscious, the rest of the issue flies past, with the Krayt Dragon up to the raid on Gardulla's fortress only taking 2 pages. The pacing just feels off, with it feeling like they writers knew the cliffhanger they wanted to leave us on, but took too much time on the first half of the issue, so just had to rush everything else, I really think it would have been better to stretch the story more, rather than compact the first half to make it all fit, giving it all time to breath would have made Kylo's triumph seem more earned and make us like him more as a protagonist.
Final Words : So we're off to Naboo, I wonder if he will just be following Vader's path on Naboo, which isn't actually much, or whether Vanee will show him some of Padme's history, and introduce him to his Grandmothers story and how that interplays with his grandfathers?
