Star Wars: Visions: Season 2: Episode 5: Journey to the Dark Head
What is it ? : A group enter a temple built into a mountain, where water falls from an entrance above. One of them spots something on a pebble on the ground, and the water droplets form a vision where a Jedi and a Sith are fighting, while a third figure watches on.
The girl, Ara, visits the Jedi Temple telling them of the place she was at beneath the statues of prophecy. She has a theory that since the visions are created by the light and dark heads of the two statues of prophecy, that if she destroys the dark head that it will influence the war between the Jedi and the Sith.
The Jedi Council is split on this, but decides to send a Jedi to help her as basically it's worth a try. They assign a young Jedi named Toul, but when the two meet Toul is caught up in memories when he fought a whip wielding Sith named Bichan, who tried to turn him.
They travel to Dolgarak, but Bichan has sensed their mission so engages their ship in combat, and they escape it on a speeder as they crash the ship into Bichans. As they speed away, Bichan leaps onto the Speeder and Toul and he fight, as Ara pilots them up the mountain, leaping out towards the massive statues of prophecy.
As the fight continues on the ring that connects the two statues, the dark side and light side energy forms in the two statues and Ara tries to complete her mission planting explosives on the Dark head.
But she notices the energies swirling around and showing that neither head is truly light or dark, but a mixture of both. And she realises that the scene in front of her is familiar, with Bichan and Toul being the Sith and Jedi she saw in her vision, and she it the third figure who can swing the battle. So she turns her attention on Bichan, managing to distract him enough to allow Toul to strike the killing blow.
Afterwards, despite their differences and bickering, Toul and Ara realise they worked well together as a team, and decide to stay together.
High Points : An interesting story, and definitely what Visions is all about, telling different types of story. There's definitely layers to this one, and I'm not sure I get them all, but Ara's visions of the future effecting her actions, which Toul's visions of the past effecting his and an interesting contrast. And when both are shown to be wrong, it's perhaps a lesson on focusing on the now rather than worrying about the future or being trapped by the past.
I also have to bring attention to Bichan's whip, which is either alive, or animated through the force, but either way it's a unique weapon and brilliant to watch, I'd have loved to see more of it as it was a great way of having a Sith vs Jedi battle without it just being Lightsabers.
Low Points : While it's an interesting story, I had to go back and rewatch this one as I found the storytelling to be quite confusing and not clear. In fact some of my conclusions I'm basing this review on might very well be wrong.
So what do you really think ? : It's quite an interesting story, with a focus on the future and past of the characters, with a pretty cool villain with a brilliant new weapon.
Definitely one of the best this season.
Final Words : I'm thinking my guess about a theme across the season being art is wrong as it was just those two episodes.
I'm thinking that I'll have to rewatch this episode again in a few weeks, once I've had time to mull over it, and see what I think then, as while I enjoyed it, I'm really not sure I got everything out of it I could have. And that can only be a good thing, an episode which gives you more over time. But I'll add my later thoughts in the comments when I come back to it.
Score : 9/10

This is one of the better episodes this season. First off, the animation is very similar to the animation presented in The Ninth Jedi. Second, I think this can serve as the basis for a Star Wars animation series starring the two heroes. The fact it takes place during the High Republic Era makes the appeal sweeter.

That's something I haven't really commented on this season, that the episodes actually seem to fit into continuity. Last season the episodes mainly seemed to fit into a generic Star Wars type setting, but we got weird mash ups of the Empire and First Order, and they were difficult to place in the timeline. But this year, it's far more clear what they're doing, and while they're using the fulness of Star Wars history, it just makes it easier to watch as the universe makes sense.
