Incom Corporation T-65 X-wing Starfighter | 6Y-2KPR (KPR Servant Droid) | Wall of Light | Clone X (Clone Assassin) |

What is it ? : We begin with writings from Darth Krayt's Holocron, talking about how he is working with the remains of the Empire, and has destroyed the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, and is now attacking the one on Ossus. Two Jedi protect some younglings being loaded onto a transport as they are attacked by Stormtroopers, Wolf Sazen and Kol Skywalker. Kol's son Cade tries to help, but Kol tells him protecting the younglings is more important than fighting alongside the two Jedi, so he returns to the ship as Wolf is attacked by a sith and falls, so Cade drags him back to the ship.
As they fly away, Cade gets a vision of his father falling in battle as he attempts to force heal Wolf, and wants to board his fighter and return. But they come under attack from Starfighters, so he instead launches to protect the transport using his anger against the enemy, but his fighter is destroyed, but Wolf says he would have felt his death, so thinks he is still alive.
On Coruscant, Imperial Emperor Roan Fel is confronted by the Sith who want to take over, and he is struck down. But when Darth Krayt takes the throne and makes the Imperial Moffs and Admirals swear loyalty to him, he realises that Roan Fel was a trained Imperial Knight so wouldn't have fallen in combat so easily, so this was a double.
As he sends his Sith off to find Roan Fel and the remaining Jedi to exterminate them, he speaks to Darth Wyyrlok, telling him he has sensed a Dark Light in the Force, healing, who he intends to find and turn to his will. . . .
High Points : So we're straight into the action, and while the pieces are in place we get the rise of Darth Krayt to the throne, the fall of the Jedi Order, and Cade's first misstep with the Dark Side, where he channels his rage. And it's nice to be shown all this instead of it just being backstory.
Low Points : But when I looked through issue 0 1/2, I thought that it saved us from lots of exposition by setting everything up. But alas no, we still get a lot of that, telling us that Coruscant was the gem of the Old Republic, fell to the Empire, was recovered by the New Republic, fell to the Vong, etc, etc. It's not a natural way of storytelling, and it makes for pages of text where we are just being caught up on the state of the galaxy and why the characters are doing what they're doing and what their plans are.
Why is healing a Dark Side thing? Wolf tells Cade that bringing him back from death has brought him to the edge of the Dark Side? Is it because prolonging life is an unnatural act as hinted at in the prequel movies? Is it merely because he did it in anger at the injustice of the death of his Jedi Master?
And why is Cade fighting in his boxer shorts and vest? He's even bare footed, some dialogue about it being a surprise attack and him being woken in the night would have been nice to set it up, but we don't get that, just a man in his underwear fighting the Sith!
So what do you really think ? : In the first frame we see Roan Fel, he looks a lot like Patrick McGoohan {The Prisoner, Braveheart, Scanners and many more}, and I thought it would have been interesting if they'd kept it that way. There's probably copyright problems, but I could imaging an entire comic series where they chose actors to play all the characters and drew it that way (something one of our GM's did in Stargate, where we had to choose the actor playing our character). Sadly, it was only that first frame, and he looks different for the rest of the comic.
Final Words : Not a fantastic start to the series, but I'm not sure they could have done much more. We get some action, and a lot of exposition, which is probably necessary to get us up to speed, lets see if it continues in this fashion. I have memories of liking this series when it was released, so hopefully it gets better as time goes on, but already it's lacking in the humour and fun that the Kotor comics had from the very beginning.
