Star Wars: Legacy: 23: Loyalties, Part 1

What is it ? : We pick up with the Pirate Rav in his court aboard the starship he uses as a based, The Crimson Axe, using subterfuge, Cade and his comrades barge in, and Rav knowing there is a massive bounty on their heads orders his people to capture them.
Cade and the others easily defeat Rav's people, and Cade put's his lightsaber blade toward Rav's face, singing him with Force Lightning. He tells Rav to swear loyalty to him, which the pirate tries to avoid by offering him death sticks, but eventually does.
So Cade gets him to return their ship to Chak and Kee,
Immediately Cade leaves, Rav reports back to Darth Maladi, swearing the same other he just swore to Cade.
Meanwhile on Bastion, Roan Fel hears about Cade's escape from the Sith, and declares they should have killed him, how many secrets has he given the Sith while in their hands. While Antares and Marisiah have a quiet moment in the gardens together.
Cade returns the ship to Chak and Kee, who tell him he should hide on the outer rim, as that's what they intend to do, and Kee tells Cade to speak to Deliah as she's upset with him, and they pair launch their ship and leave, with Cade and Jariah returning to the Mynock, as outside a dark robed figure plants a tracking beacon on the ship.
They also launch, heading for a safe haven, Rawk's Nest, where they should be safe at least temporarily, although last time the leader of the base was upset with Jariah for pursuing his daughter who was underage at the time.
Cade speaks with Deliah, discovering she is upset with him for the relationship he seemed to be forming with Darth Talon when he was in the Sith Temple, but he assures her it was just an act and the two make up, with Deliah ending up massaging his head as they arrive at Rawk's Nest.
They find the base under attack by Black Sun, and they join the battle, helping out and earning the gratitude of the defenders by the time they come into land.
Outside, the dark robed figure is watching them, and makes a report, identifying themself as Azlyn Rae.

High Points : And we're back to the main characters once again, and at least the series seems to be following an understandable path, they're repaying their debt to Chak and Kee, and then deciding to go into hiding. While we really don't have any long term goals for these characters, we do know they're being hunted by the Sith Empire, so going on the run and into hiding makes a lot of sense. (although hiding in the Star Wars universe seems easy enough, just fly to any of the many habitable worlds, preferably one with a low population, and just live off the land.
And I did like the moment with Rav where he instantly betrays the oath he swore to Cade, and swears the same oath to Maladi, showing exactly the kind of guy he is, and how little power he puts in oathes.

Low Points : There's a moment in this issue which just made me stop, Roan Fel on hearing that Cade has escaped from the Sith, rather than being pleasantly amused, or even just interested that he could walk out of Darth Krayt's presence unharmed and free, is instead angry. Angry that Cade could have been tortured to reveal secrets that he knows of Fel and Bastion?
But what secrets were they telling this bounty hunter who saved Marisiah. She might have trusted Cade and built a tiny bit of a relationship with him. But to everyone else, he was just a Bounty Hunter, earning money for returning her to her father. If had been any other Bounty Hunter, would they have been telling Boba Fett, or Bossk, some vital Imperial Secrets? So what secrets? The Sith know that Fel is on Bastion, Bastion itself was under their control only months earlier? I really can't think what Cade might know which couldn't easily be found out by the Sith through other means. Roan Fel just seems to be coming across as an asshole here, and unless they're repositioning him so we can see both the Fel and Sith Empires are bad guys, and the future of the galaxy must lie in another direction, I really don't see what they're trying to do here.

When Cade bursts in to confront Rav, Rav comments that Black Sun have a massive bounty out for Cade. Why?, this is the first mention of Black Sun we've seen in this series. Later in the issue, Cade helps Rawk's Nest fight off Black Sun, so they might be pissed off at him for that. But it makes me wonder if he misspoke, and meant the Sith have a massive bounty out for Cade, or whether they're trying some last second worldbuilding to let us know that Cade has history with Black Sun due to his involvement with Rawk's Nest?

So what do you really think ? : One of my big problems with this series has been not knowing the motivations and plans of Cade and his friends, and for now at least that seems to have been dealt with, as they are just trying to get the hell away from the Sith Empire, so their actions make sense and I can understand why they're acting as they do. Unless the rest of the series is them just on the run all the time, the overall problem still needs solved, but I'll take what I can get, and enjoy where the story is taking me for the moment.

Final Words : Although it's not a complaint, I did find the scene with Antares and Marisiah a bit odd, they've been absent from the comic for so long, and this scene seems so pointless, that it really seemed to me to exist merely to go "Hey, remember these characters exist, we promise they'll be important soon!". Which did work, as I found myself wondering where their story will lead, wondering if the attitude shown by Roan Fel will mean that he isn't long for this story, and we'll get Marisiah having to take over control of the Fel Empire, which I think could really lead to an interesting new direction for the story. But I really don't remember anything from when I read this originally back in the 00's, so I guess we'll find out if anything happens like that as we go on.

Score : 8.5/10

What secrets? Perhaps the security clearance code the Marasiah Fel or Antares Draco used? A general idea of patrol patterns on Bastion? Fel might know of possible safe havens where the Jedi might be at, and I believe he's been trying to get the surviving Jedi to join the Imperial Knights. So there might be a few that Fel fears Krayt might know now.

While the Sith might torture someone they might think have any of the above.
Fel worries what Cade might have actually told them, and in the few days that Cade was present, how many of these did he witness? Codes should have been changed if witnessed by outsiders, he couldn't have witnessed much of patrol patterns, and if secrecy is important, then they should be changed regularly anyway. Did Fel blab secret Jedi hiding places to Cade when he was on Bastion, I never got the impression that they even met.
Fel just seems to be behaving like an asshole.

While I wouldn't go that far just yet, I do believe he's becoming a paranoiac.
