Top Five: Modern Board Games

Welcome to this episode of RPGGamer Top 5s, and this time we're going to do the top 5 Modern Board Games.
Now by Modern Board Games we mean ones released in the past 25 years, so we're ignoring Chess, Monopoly, and even slighty newer games like Risk and Trivial Pursuit. We're doing the games which are often dug out by gaming groups when they can't get an RPG together, rather than the ones you play with your grandparents at christmas.

And we're onto Episode 2: A Quick Salvage Run as we work through Star Wars Resistance: Season 2. And today we've added Narvin (Nikto Pirate), Snarl (Hassk Pirate), & Senator Hamato Xiono (New Republic Senator) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section, Command bridge droid to the Star Wars D/6 Droids Section, and the Ravager Mechanics (Changeling) Mark 71NB Racing starfighter to the Star Wars D/6 Starships Section of the Site.

Whatever you need to get the job done, you can find it here, but it won't be cheap. And remember to watch your back before someone decides to make you yesterday's news.

30/January/2020 Posted by Freddy

Well a nice gentle start into working my way through Star Wars Resistance: Season 2, as Episode 1: Into the Unknown is based entirely upon the Colossus and includes no new characters or locations that we didn't see in season one. So today all we've added is MB-13A (First Order Astromech) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site. Who is the antagonist of the episode, who although was in season 1, was such a minor character that I'd not made stats for him then.
MB-13 is just counted as a BB unit according to Wookieepedia, but because he comes equipped with an Electroshock prod (unlike BB-8 or CB-23) it made me wonder if the M in his designation was for Military, and he's actually a Military variant of the BB units. But there's no evidence to back that up, just my own idle thoughts.

28/January/2020 Posted by Freddy

I'll have a look tomorrow and see what other things I've missed from Rise of Skywalker, but assuming that I've now caught everything, then I'll move onto working my way through Season 2 of Star Wars: Resistance. Anyway, the 3 I've added today are the E-851 Blaster Pistol to the Star Wars D/6 Weapons Section, the Resistance B-wing Starfighter to the Star Wars D/6 Starships Section, & Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine (Darth Sidious) (as of Rise of Skywalker) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.

The Resistance B-Wing is a cool looking upgrade to the one used during the Battle of Endor, but I have to admit that I think it actually looks more primitive and clunky than the original. They've added angles to a design which really didn't need them, but it still manages to look quite interesting. Personally, I'd have changed the body and wings more than the cockpit, maybe making the weapons longer and more like the X-Wing's, making the vessel look a bit more aggressive.

Well a new editorial summing up my thoughts having now seen and reviewed the final episode of Star Wars Resistance. So . . . that was Resistance!
Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

27/January/2020 Posted by Freddy

And so, we reach the finale of Resistance with our review of Star Wars Resistance: Season 2 Episode 18: The Escape. And as usual, a spoiler free TLDR; version of my review, actually quoting some of my review this time.
The finale sums up the series perfectly, so perhaps is the most perfect ending that Resistance could possibly have. A collection of missed opportunities, weak storytelling, and poor characterisation. Not a total disaster, but it could have been so much more.

27/January/2020 Posted by Freddy

So running really late today as I'm still very sick with the flu, but as I promised here's the three main droids from Rise of Skywalker. Today we've added BB-8 (as of Rise of Skywalker), See-Threepio (C-3PO) (as of Rise of Skywalker), & Artoo Detoo (R2-D2) (as of Rise of Skywalker) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.
The fact I've not covered any of these three for the other movies seems like a dreadful oversight, but one that we've not righted. And tomorrow I'll be finishing off anything I've missed, like Emperor Palpatine which was helpfully pointed out yesterday.

26/January/2020 Posted by Freddy

A day off yesterday as I'd been completely floored by the flu, can't sleep tonight so back to doing something at least. Today I've added Wedge Antilles (Ace Pilot), Kylo Ren / Ben Solo, & Rose Tico (Resistance Engineer) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.

I think that's pretty much about it, except the 3 droids, R2-D2, C-3PO and BB-8, and I'll have a look through to see what else I've missed. By which time I'll have reviewed the last episode of Resistance, and can begin working my way through the season of that.

A couple of points I thought of while doing todays three. Firstly, that Wookieepedia lists Ben Solo as being Chandrilian, as he was born on Chandrila? So, his parents are a Corellian Human, and an Alderaanian Human, and he's a Chandrilan Human, just because he was born there. Guess it just works like a nationality here on earth, so the Alderaanians will completely die out in a few years no matter of any efforts to save some of their culture . . . .
Also, it the background information on Rose, apparently Rian Johnson added her because it was supposed to be Poe and Finn who went to Canto Blight and he wanted someone who'd challenge Finn, so added Rose. . . . But that creates one of the moments I disliked most about The Last Jedi, where Finn, who was kidnapped from his parents and enslaved by the First Order is lectured on the sins of the First Order on Slaves by someone who wasn't. . . . . Seems as if the scene would have been improved simply by swapping the roles around, not by changing one of the characters.

Retro Games: Deuteros, The Next Millennium

Welcome to another of my favourite games of all time, and this time I'll be talking about Deuteros.
Giving it it's full title, Deuteros: The Next Millennium, it was published by Activision for the Amiga and Atari ST and released in 1991 and is the sequel to Millennium 2.2. It was designed and written by Ian Bird who previously had developed the seminal nuclear war game, Theatre Europe, and continues to develop games to this day. Graphics for Deuteros were done by Jai Redman and it's music by Matt Bates.
The game is a resource management game, where most of your time is spent discovering sources of rare elements you need for your various projects, and transporting them to your factories. To find these sources of elements you need to explore the Solar system and beyond, using probes and starships.

Another three of the main characters from Rise of Skywalker, today we've added Lieutenant Commander Nien Nunb (Sullustan Pilot), General Leia Organa (as of Rise of Skywalker), & Rey (as of Rise of Skywalker) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.
Rey is obviously based on the stats we've already put up for her from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, I increased her skills to make her slightly more advanced than Luke is during Return of the Jedi. Nien Nunb's and Leia's stat's are based on those from the Special Edition Sourcebook by West End Games, taking their skills and stats up based on their experience. Given that Nien Nunb increased his skills vastly, becoming a Resistance officer, and piloting a Starfighter and even Capital Ships, his variety of skills has increased, with the level based on that he already had for some Mechanical skills. And Leia's skills were increased, in line with her role as a General, but the revelations about her Jedi training and role instructing Rey in the force, has meant she has had Force Skills and Powers added to her, also based on Luke's from Return of the Jedi, although slightly lower.

Another smaller group of the main Rise of Skywalker Characters. I'm finding it a little odd seeing three versions of these characters as they developed since The Force Awakens. Anyway, today we've addec Armitage Hux (as of Rise of Skywalker), Finn (as of Rise of Skywalker), & Maz Kanata (as of Rise of Skywalker) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.

So another episode of Resistance this week, with only one to go, and our review is up, Star Wars Resistance: Season 2 Episode 17: Rebuilding the Resistance. Our TLDR; review, it's a good one, with loads of Starfighter action, which is kind of what we were promised about Resistance all along.

22/January/2020 Posted by Freddy

Okay, so we're moving onto the more major characters of Rise of Skywalker, and due to the extra work needed on each of these, I can't do as many each day, so a much smaller group of additions today. So we've added, Poe Dameron (as of Rise of Skywalker), Chewbacca (as of Rise of Skywalker), & Landonis Balthazar Calrissian (as of The Rise of Skywalker) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.

For Lando and Chewie I went back to the Special Edition Sourcebook from West End Games (WEG40089), and worked the stats forward from there. While Lando needed a bunch of stuff adding, I found that Chewbacca was already incredibly skilled, so I just slightly improved some skills (especially piloting) to update him to Rise of Skywalker.

Today from The Rise of Skywalker, we've got the Knights of Ren. Today we've added, Ap-lek (Knight of Ren), Cardo (Knight of Ren), Kuruk (Knight of Ren), Trudgen (Knight of Ren), Ushar (Knight of Ren), & Vicrul (Knight of Ren) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.

Now, I've used the pictures for each of these from Wookieepedia. But they're not the best pictures, so I'll be updating them when I get chance as I believe there's full length character shots of a bunch of these characters, even if I just have to use segments of the picture shown here for three of these guys.

And finishing up the minor characters from Rise of Skywalker today, onto the more important characters tomorrow, and it'll be at a slower release speed. So today we've added, Zulay Ulor (Mercenary Pilot), Seftin Vanik (Resistance Pilot), Temmin (Snap) Wexley (Resistance Pilot), Miller Worlens (Resistance Pilot), Yipsit (Resistance Technician), Shasa Zaro (Resistance Pilot), Elna Zibsara (Resistance Pilot), Tabala Zo (Resistance Officer), & Zutton to the Star Wars D/6 Character Section of the Site.

Retro RPG: Lone Wolf Multiplayer Game Book

Launched in the 80's, the Lone Wolf series of gamebooks quickly became firm favourites among a growing fan base. Alone among the gamebooks of their day, Lone Wolf was the only one to feature a cohesive and exciting world, and an extended campaign in which your character could grow and expand as he travelled through all 28 books of the original series. This was the first true mega-campaign! Prepare to return to the world of Magnamund, this time with your friends. The Lone Wolf Multiplayer Gamebook is a full roleplaying game, based on the simple rules system of the solo books - it is so easy, anyone can play! The first book in this range brings you the core rules, introduces the Kai Lord character class and presents three introductory scenarios to get you started.

And yet another batch of Rise of Skywalker Characters, but at least we're getting towards the end. Tomorrow should see us getting through the rest of the minor characters, then we can get onto some of the more important characters, such as the Knights of Ren (I recognise the irony of that statement). Today we've added, Huper Tenrecs (Talpiddian Weapons Specialist), Wilsa Teshlo (Kessurian Noble), Cai Threnalli (Abednedo Pilot), Seossra Thwisp (Resistance Spy), Amuncie Tidian (Boosodian Forger), TQ3-R1 (Resistance Astromech), Commander Masir Trach (First Order Officer), Ommo Twilto (Mercenary Enforcer), & Wrobie Tyce (Resistance Pilot) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.

Freddy

PS, another great droid today, even if it does look like it was built out of a boiler and a bunch of plumbing supplies, although that's part of the charm for me.

Another batch of characters from The Rise of Skywalker, today we've added, Dynia Reekeene, Bo Rogiave (Lacertilo Soldier), Captain Chesille Sabrond (Sith Eternal Officer), Allie Samta (Resistance Pilot), Tommet Sozach (Mercenary Leader), Garn Stewer, Jr. (Resistance Pilot), Enanan Supa (Resistance Pilot), Odla Sur (Resistance Scout), & Phenlass Sur (Resistance Scout) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.

Well, no image I like from today's batch of characters, so I've used OC-JK14 from yesterday instead, because I really liked the design.

17/January/2020 Posted by Freddy

Another massive selection of characters from The Rise of Skywalker, today we've added OC-JK14 (Resistance Astromech), Elliver Olim (Resistance Soldier), Juronus Opto, General Bellava Parnadee (First Order Officer), Clemitt Polus (Resistance Pilot), Dellso Prin (Cingulon Starship Technician), Allegiant General Enric Pryde (First Order Officer), Quiggold (Gabdorin Pirate_, General Domaric Quinn (First Order Officer), R2-SHP (Resistance Astromech), R5-2JE (Resistance Astromech), R6-D8 (Resistance Astromech), & R6-LE5 (Resistance Astromech) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.

Now, everyday I add an image to go with the daily update, and usually it's a poster for the movie or thumbnail of the episode I'm doing stats for, but for Rise of Skywalker I've been just using one of the images from that days updates. And today I've been stuck, as I adores both the image I've used (a very cool paint design on an R2 Unit). the very similarly painted R6-LE5, and the design of OC-JK14. Makes me think I should have thought ahead, and split these over different days rather than just working my way through alphabetically, anyway, as should be clear, I love me some Astromechs.

Top Five: Computer RPGs of All Time

Welcome to this episode of RPGGamer Top 5s, and this time we're going to do the top 5 Computer RPG's of all time.
Now we've done RPG's for different formats before, and covered different operating systems, but for this poll we left it open ended and let those voting make up their own minds what we meant by a Computer RPG. Now we got some interesting results, and it tended to favour older games, with nothing showing up from the last decade, and the top two are from 20 years ago or more.

Another aay of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker character additions, and we're reaching about the halfway point, still loads to do. Today we've added L4E-R5 (R5 Astromech Droid), Lazu Lirona (Smuggler), Kid Malmash (Shungbeek Pilot), Plesko Marno (Ozrelanso Navigator), Wizzich Mozzer (Cyclorrian Technician), Wipolo Nagg (Resistance Soldier), Renk Narviz (Resistance Pilot), Pattros Navesh (Resistance Pilot), Somaled New, & Twylope Nur (Resistance Medic) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.

So the second of this weeks episodes of Resistance, Star Wars Resistance: Season 2 Episode 16: No Place Safe. My TLDR; spoiler free review is that it's another good one, which feels like it was beginning to wrap things up towards the end of the series, but then takes it all back and returns to the status quo. That said, it's a good one though.

And another day of The Rise of Skywalker updates, and today I think I'm mopping up most of the rest Non-Character stats, so I think the next week I'm going to be just doing characters to get through the vast selection of new and updated characters from the movie. Anyway, today we've added Kuat Systems Engineering RZ-2 A-wing interceptor, Koensayr Manufacturing BTA-NR2 Y-wing starfighter, & Osseriton Assemblages Oubliette-class transport (Night Buzzard) to the Star Wars D/6 Starships Section, and Orbak (ridable mount), Vexis snake, Oki-Poki (Rodent), & Zymod (arboreal lizard) to the Star Wars D/6 Creatures Section of the Site.

Top Five: Star Wars Movies

Welcome to this episode of RPGGamer Top 5s, and this time we're going to do the top 5 Star Wars Movies.
So with a new Star Wars movie out at the cinema, and The Mandalorian series conquering all the Meme's, we thought we'd have a popular poll and see what people thought were the best Star Wars movies. Because the fanbase have proven so rational and contemplative that we can calmly discuss such a topic without anyone getting insulting or argumentative.
Star Wars has three eras, the originals, which although classics are now beginning to look a little dates, the prequels which were badly received at the time, but now are the Star Wars movies that many fans grew up with, and the Disney era, which many consider to have been the doom of the franchise by taking it away from George Lucas and letting some other movie makers have a play in his universe.
Now the poll is of movies released in cinema's, so no Holiday Special here, and we stuck to the main live action movies, so the Ewok movies, Caravan of Courage and Battle for Endor were ignored too (even though I remember them being released in cinema's at the time), as was The Clone Wars animated movie. We just stuck to the nine parts of the three trilogies, and the two Star Wars Stories which were released. And, because I know people would ask, I'll run down the votes for every movie before we reach number one, so in reality this is a top 11.
But it's one of our bigger polls where over 55,000 votes were cast, so there's obviously no way anyone could disagree with the results.

Okay, so today I'll begin trying to provide stats for everything I can from Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. However, since the movie is still fairly recent, there's a bunch of information that I won't have access to yet, along with good imagery for a number of items, so I'll either have to use poor images, or leave things out until we've got a chance to get better images.
Anyway, today we've added, ST-W48 Blaster & F-11ABA heavy blaster cannon to the Star Wars D/6 Weapons Section, First Order ElectroProd Stormtrooper, Sith Eternal Stormtrooper (Sithtrooper), Sith Eternal Jet Trooper & First Order Jet Trooper to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section, and GoCorp Arunskin 75D skimmer & Aratech-Loratus Corporation 125-Z TreadSpeeder Bike to the Star Wars D/6 Vehicles Section of the Site.
In the past I've tried to do things in an organised fashion, and what should be obvious today is that I've just dived in here and done some ground vehicles and First Order troopers (along with their weapons). Hopefully I can keep organised enough to actually get through everything without too much falling through the cracks.

Can't believe I missed this one from The Mandalorian, today I've added Ferry Droid (Modified R2 Astromech) to the Star Wars D/6 Droids Section of the Site.
Back tomorrow to start running through The Rise of Skywalker. But where I tried before to cover the everything from an entire movie in one week, I'm not going to try that again, especially with a movie as packed with new material as this one, so I'll be taking it slowly.

Retro RPG: The Dark Side Sourcebook

The Dark Side Sourcebook is a supplement to the Star Wars Roleplaying Game published by Wizards of the Coast. It is written by Bill Slavicsek and J.D. Wiker. It was first published August 2001.

If only you knew the power of the dark side....

The Force is an all-encompassing energy field generated by all living things. It binds the galaxy together, bringing balance through its two sides. While the light side promotes knowledge and peace, the Force also has a dark side. Anger, fear, and aggression emanate from the dark side, providing a corrupting power to those willing to draw on its destructive nature.

• New dark side classes, skills, and feats

• Advice on running and Gamemastering dark side heroes and villains

• Game statistics for iconic dark side characters from the Star Wars universe

• New prestige classes for dark side characters

• Dark side opponents, creatures, equipment, locations, and adventure hooks

• A history of the dark side, providing advice on how to use this material in any Star Wars era, including the Tales of the Jedi era.

To use this sourcebook, a Gamemaster also needs the Star Wars Roleplaying Game 3rd Edition by Wizards of the Coast.

Well, I know I promised these yesterday, but I needed to have a bit of a think about them. So firstly I'd like to present Mandalorian (The Tribe) which I've added to the Star Wars D/6 Species Section, and it's a bit of an add on to the normal species, which you apply in addition to the normal species you've chosen for a character. But more details within the description itself, and let me know what you think.
I've also modified the stats for Mandalorian armor. Changing things around a bit, so that the suits are a bit more modular, where the Gamesmaster can allow a starting Mandalorian to have a basic set of armour (basically equivalent of a set of Stormtrooper Armour), but then to upgrade it by allowing them to gain more modules and add Sensors, Jetpack, Vambraces and Beskar Plating, as we've seen in The Mandalorian series.
Anyway, let me know what you think. I could probably add crafting rules for the various modules, but it kind of feels more like something with should be Roleplayed out.

So continuing through The Mandalorian: Chapter 8: Redemption, we've got the main characters (and a few others I realised I'd missed yesterday). So today we've added Din Djarin (The Mandalorian), The Child (Baby Yoda), Carasynthia (Cara) Dune, Imperial Remnant Incinerator Stormtrooper & Mandalorian Armorer to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.
So while I've spent quite a bit of time doing these, I've no doubt made some controversial decisions, and probably quite a few mistakes. Basically I started with Boba Fett, and worked from there, which I think the series did too. So any comments would be appreciated with any modifications that you think should be made.

Top 5: RPGs on the Nintendo 3DS

Welcome to this episode of RPGGamer Top 5s, and this time we're going to do the top 5 RPG's on the Nintendo 3DS.
The Nintendo 3DS is a handheld game console produced by Nintendo. It is capable of displaying stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses or additional accessories. Nintendo announced the console in March 2010 and officially unveiled it at E3 2010 on June 15. The console succeeds the Nintendo DS, featuring backward compatibility with older Nintendo DS video games. Its primary competitor was the PlayStation Vita from Sony.

Okay, I'm taking this slow and steady, as there is too much to get wrong on these. So our coverage of The Mandalorian: Chapter 8: Redemption is going to be split over 3 days, with Cara and The Mandalorian being covered tomorrow, and Mandalorians, and Mandalorian Armour being covered the following day. However, today we've added the Razor Crest to the Star Wars D/6 Starships Section, Greef Karga (head of the Bounty Hunters Guild), Moff Gideon (Imperial Warlord) & IG-11 (Assassin/Nursemaid Droid) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.
There's obviously going to be a lot to debate in these stats, so have a look and make your comments and we can try to refine these into the best that we can (for example I've given the Razor Crest a security system as The Mandalorian tells Kuiil to activate it and nothing on this planet will be able to penetrate it, yet the Jawa's easily disassemble the ship in the second episode, so I guess it might not be that good).

        Well, first of all.

Happy New Year 2020

And we're on to The Mandalorian: Chapter 7: The Reckoning as we work our way through The Mandalorian, and today we've added Kuiil (Ugnaught Engineer) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section, Sienar Fleet Systems Outland TIE fighter to the Star Wars D/6 Starships Section, and Nevarro to the Star Wars D/6 Planets & Places Section of the Site.

Normally on New Years Eve I do an update on how the site has been doing for the past year, but I wanted to see how the month turned out, as December 2019 was the sites busiest month ever, getting double the traffic that December 2018 had gotten. Amazing what the release of both The Mandalorian and Rise of Skywalker does for traffic to a Star Wars Site.
Well, during 2019 we managed to finish the Marvel Comics Series, do the Droids TV Series and stat out the First Season of Resistance. We also launched the CEC YT Series Designer, and the Ugly Workshop which have both been fairly popular and a load of fun.
Comparatively it doesn't seem as impressive as 2018, but the sheer size of the Marvel Series meant it took a year to get through it all.
Obviously at the moment we're working our way through The Mandalorian, and immediately afterwards will start on Rise of Skywalker which may take a few weeks to work my way through everything new in the movie, but I've already bought the Visual Guide, and the Haynes Rebel Starfighter Manual in preparation (and am Considering the Haynes Tie Fighter Manual as well). After that we should be ready for the end of Resistance and working my way through it's second season, but depending on the timing I may start my way through the 2003 Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series (not "The" Clone Wars, which we've already done), reviewing and stat'ing all of the episodes of that. Or if the timing works out, I'll do Resistance then Clone Wars.
Beyond that, well in February we've got season 7 of The Clone Wars, which we'll review and stat our way through, and when we're not concentrating on New Star Wars material, our long term project is to work our way through the Dark Horse Comics Tales of the Jedi series of comics, through to the Knights of the Old Republic series, and Stat out that whole 4,000 aby period of time.

Anyway, that's our plans for 2020, as always, if you've any thoughts, comment below, or get in touch through email and we'll try to get back to you as soon as we can.
